Cancer surgeon Monica Bertagnolli emphasized her rural roots, experience treating patients, and desire to make treatments affordable

Monica Bertagnolli greets members of the Senate health committee before a hearing on her nomination as National Institutes of Health director.A Senate hearing today to consider the nomination of Monica Bertagnolli to lead the National Institutes of Health went well for the cancer surgeon. Committee Chair Bernie Sanders grilled Bertagnolli about NIH’s role in controlling drug prices, and Republican members pressed her on politically sensitive research.

Sanders opened the hearing by noting that people in the United States often pay much more than patients in other countries for drugs developed with NIH support. “We need an NIH director who is prepared to take on the greed of the pharmaceutical industry,” Sanders said. He wanted to know whether Bertagnolli would restore aclause to NIH contracts with companies to develop drugs that then–Director Harold Varmus removed in 1995 over concerns that it was dissuading companies from working with NIH.

Making NIH-developed treatments “available and affordable” is one of her three priorities as NIH director, Bertagnolli said. She also emphasized research—including fundamental biology, data analytics, social science—and more efficient and diverse clinical trials. Her third priority is to “restore faith and trust in our nation’s top scientists” and inspire young people to pursue biomedical careers, she said.

She told Senator Roger Marshall that she agrees NIH funding should be spread more evenly across the country, giving as an example a clinical trial where she enrolled patients in Laredo, Texas; a Native American reservation; and her hometown of Rock Springs, Wyoming. Partnering with community hospitals to find patients for trials, she said, is “one way we can engage more of the American people” in NIH research.
