Rachel Bruno-Hardy, now 37, remembers the traumatic moment in the early 2000s when her legendary father, who has bipolar disorder, was sectioned. She was just 15 years old and it played out in front of the tabloids and the public.. “My dad was one of the first celebrities to be sectioned in the public eye.
Around four million children in the UK have a parent with a mental health issue, said Dympna Cunnane, CEO of Our Time. And the NHS says around one in every 100 people in the UK will beat some point in their lifetime .,” says Cunnane, “ means the children are likely to have experienced their parent being taken into hospital which is a traumatic experience.
“I feel a lot of anger because had he been different, then we might have had a different relationship. We are close but bipolar has taken a lot away from my relationship with him.” Despite the millions of children in this position, Cunnane says we have a “collective blindness” as a society to the people in this position. “We know about both the problem and the solution but we struggle to survive,” she says.” If we don’t make it, then 20 years of work will be lost, these children will continue to suffer in silence and the state will have to pick up the bill.”.
