The huge mammal, estimated to be around 25ft in size, was spotted on Arbroath Beach in Angus by worried onlookers on Saturday afternoon.
It's understood the British Diving Marine Life Rescue were alerted to the incident by locals but sadly the whale was already dead.
Stuart Betty, who runs the Strange Places In Scotland Facebook page, told the Record: "I went down after work yesterday after one of our subscribers messaged us. There were a few people down having a look - it was pretty gruesome to be fair. The whale that washed up in Edinburgh also sadly died after getting stranded despite a major rescue mission to save it.
