While at SDCC2023, Screen Rant spoke to Ed Boon (noobde) about the new gameplay, Mortal Kombat's legacy, and exciting Homelander, Omni-Man, and peacemaker cameos in MortalKombat1
Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Mortal Kombat 1 is the newest installment in the franchise and the second reboot in the series. The first Mortal Kombat was released in 1992 and has grown into a massive franchise with multiple iterations of the games, both animated and live-action movies, novels, comics, and more.
Liu Kang now is the god, and Raiden is kind of like the common man. Sub-Zero and Scorpion are brothers now, as opposed to adversaries trying to kill each other. And so that kind of mix-up of what you know and telling you new origin stories, to me, is one of the most exciting parts of Mortal Kombat 1.
Ed Boon: Absolutely. Like I said, it starts with the big bang, this whole story, and it is basically... It's starting from the most basic roots of there is no such thing as Mortal Kombat. It is some of these characters, you see how they became how they are, you know? So characters like Mileena and Baraka, who we just kind of recently announced the reason why they have their faces and their teeth is completely different now.
Ed Boon: Cameo fighters is the brand new feature that we have as far as gameplay is concerned, right? There are two character select screens, so imagine yourself picking your main fighter, like you've done for 30 years, but then there's another one, which is like an assist fighter, and they make these cameo appearances, and they help you with their abilities.
Ed Boon: Yeah. I'm amazed at that as well. If I were to guess, I think that what separates Mortal Kombat is we're not afraid to really change things up, right? Like, we don't just kind of repeat the same game with a prettier skin on it. I know that you're a Scorpion guy, but what's the one character that somebody else would pick, and you knew you were going to have a tough time playing against that character?
Whenever we launch a game, we continue to support it for a long period of time, and with a bunch of characters, and we announced Mortal Kombat characters. We announced Quan Chi, Ermac, and Takeda will be joining the roster after we launch. Omni-Man, Homelander, and Peacemaker are the guest characters that are going to be kind of joining the Mortal Kombat universe. Ed Boon: Yeah, yeah.
