The Government's political opponents have blamed the losses on a revolving door of ministers and leaders, resulting in taxpayer funding 'going down the drain'
Major infrastructure projects that were costly included the cancelled TransPennine route upgrade for which £50m was spent on project management fees and £140m on assessing development options. Previous iterations of design plans for the project which were discarded caused the bulk of the cost, with incurred project management also costing taxpayers.
Meanwhile, the Cabinet Office’s new secured vetting infrastructure was cancelled after becoming 50 per cent over budget for £2.5m. Delays in vetting were labelled a “threat toThe Cabinet Office said there was a shortage of capacity in security vetting compared to supply, aggravated by “operational weakness”. The Government had been working on new software to aide the vetting process but abandoned the work at the development stage following high costs.
The Get Help to Retrain scheme, an adult education scheme for those over 24 whose jobs were at risk of automation, cost £2.4m after the scheme was discontinued after the wider ranging National Skills Fund became the focus of the Government. Pat McFadden, Labour’s shadow Chief Secretary to the Treasury, criticised the costs from financial losses.
