A total of 173 people were killed in road collisions in Scotland last year, an increase of 32 on the previous year
The number of people killed on Scotland’s roads reached its highest level for seven years in 2022, according to official figures which suggest efforts to cut the death toll are failing.This is the highest figure since 2016 and comes despite ministers setting a target of halving the number of road deaths to no more than 87 per year by 2030.
Pedestrians accounted for 912 casualties last year, up by almost a fifth from 2021. This included 367 pedestrians who were seriously injured and 33 who were killed. The figures also show 587 children were among the casualties in 2022, with 176 being seriously injured and three being killed.set a target of halving the number of road deaths by 2030, from a baseline total of 174 set using the 2014-18 average.
“These figures must be the urgent wake-up call for them to finally prioritise investment in upgrading critical trunk roads to guaranteeTransport minister Fiona Hyslop said the Scottish Government was investing more than £31m on road safety this financial year, supporting projects including its trunk road casualty reduction programme, road safety improvement fund, safety camera programme and the expansion of 20mph zones.
“Road safety remains an absolute priority for this Government and we are determined to continue working towards our goal of Scotland having the best road safety performance in the world by 2030,” she added.News
