Attacking midfielder Ryan Gauld, who was compared to Lionel Messi in his youth, has been omitted from Steve Clarke's squad for the European Championship
Aberdeen-born Ryan Gauld burst onto the scene with some dazzling displays for Dundee United, where he made his senior debut aged just 17. By 2013, he was even being linked with Manchester United during fellow Scot David Moyes’ brief reign in charge.
"It was a little bit strange and it came about just because I’m small and left-footed. That’s the comparison and again it was made only after about four or five games for United.” Despite impressing for Vancouver, Gauld continues to be overlooked by his country. Speaking earlier this year after signing a new contract with the Whitecaps, he insisted he was still desperate to play for his country.
