The Scottish Government would need to plug a £15million blackhole to get Scotland matches on free-to-air TV.
Games played by the national team at the World Cup and European Championships are currently included on the list. But Yousaf’s plans would mean qualifying clashes involving Clarke’s side - as well as those for Pedro Martínez Losa’s Scottish women’s national team - would also have to be broadcast free of charge to the nation. That would give them the same protected status as events like the finals of both the Scottish and FA Cups, as well as Wimbledon, the Olympics and the Grand National.
The cash provided by the broadcaster accounts for around a third of the Hampden outfit’s entire revenue stream and goes towards vital projects which prop up the grassroots game. Yousaf has promised to hold talks with SFA chief exec Ian Maxwell before pushing though with his appeal to counterparts at Westminster, who retain a final say on broadcasting policy.
“But most Scots are blocked from watching the national team with the bulk of games shown on a pay-per-view basis. With so much at stake in qualifiers, our vision is for all fans to be able to watch their national teams as they battle to reach the world’s biggest competitions.
