A Scots mum has told how she was forced to return to work while receiving treatment for cancer as she couldn't afford to pay her bills in the cost of living crisis. Joanna Shaw, 51, from Dundee, began a phased return to her job in sales in October, but struggled to survive on a reduced salary before returning full-time this week as she battles to make ends meet.
The mum-of-two was forced to ask friends for food and went without heating after taking sick leave from work to undergo treatment. She told the Record: "My fuel bill is up to £280 a month from £140-150. I've been switching the heating off and just relying on blankets and jumpers. Every month I'm worried that there's not going to be enough money for certain bills coming out.
Since starting back at work full time, Joanna is now unlikely to receive any financial help from the government while undergoing the remainder of her treatment.Top news stories today Joanna is now calling on more to be done to support people going through cancer treatment in full-time employment, as she admits she would be better off on benefits.
