The berry is a rich source of natural antioxidants, rich in omega-3, omega-6 fatty acids, vitamins A, B, E and polyphenols.
Sea buckthorn berries could be the next superfood, with potential benefits for diabetes and obesity management, according to new research.
Dr Renan Danielski, first author of the study, said: "This is a first step in understanding how sea buckthorn polyphenols can modulate our physiology in a beneficial manner." The study, which was published in the Journal of the Science of Food and Agriculture, sheds light on the characteristic composition of polyphenols, compounds known for their antioxidative properties.
Numerous distinct compounds boasting heightened bioactivity were identified by the researchers. Interestingly, these elements are exclusive to the sea buckthorn cultivar grown in Newfoundland, distinguishing them from other regions.
