A school bus was struck by a Metra commuter train Friday afternoon after stalling at tracks in Orland Park, but the driver and five children inside were able to get off the bus before that train hit, officials said. The Orland Fire Protection District said it responded to a call of a stalled school bus on railroad tracks at 167th Street and 109th Avenue in Orland Park that had been hit by a Metra train.The driver had stopped at the tracks, then started to pull forward when the bus stalled, according to the fire district.
As the crossing gates were coming down, the driver and children were able to get off the bus before the train crushed the front end of the vehicle, photos provided by the fire district show.
