The Saudi Pro League has made a serious impact on world football this summer — this is the story of what happened behind the scenes
For those players and agents who got beyond the initial flurry of WhatsApp messages and cold calls, a different charm offensive emerged.
But the serious talks came at the start of the summer when delegations from the leading Saudi clubs — often accompanied by a SPL executive, a sports ministry figure, a high-ranking PIF official or, in some cases, someone from the tourism authority — arrived in London, Paris, Madrid and elsewhere to escalate negotiations and try to clinch the deals.
At the same time, the majority of players moving to Saudi Arabia have moved for wages far in excess of what they would be earning elsewhere. One player, moving to one of the mid-range SPL clubs, is said to have described his new salary as “telephone numbers”. In the end, his client decided against the move, preferring to stay in Europe rather than move to Saudi Arabia while still in his 20s. But he was impressed by the sales pitch.
But another agent says the whole experience left him cold, the difficulty of dealing with so many voices and then the problem of several rival agents trying to muscle in on negotiations in the hope of taking a cut.
