The street has been up for renaming since 2021 due to Macdonald’s role in Canada’s residential school system, and his championing of other policies that harmed Indigenous people.that residents of the street will not face any costs, and that assistance will be made available for those who might need help registering address changes for their services or subscriptions.
Macdonald died before the City of Saskatoon was incorporated, and is not known to have had any particular connection to the area. The street bearing his name is located in the Confederation Park neighbourhood, which was devised during a period of patriotic fervour around Canada’s 1967 centennial, and features streets named for former prime ministers and other figures from Canadian history.
