The process water that was released is a byproduct of oil and gas production and can have high salt water content.from July 2018 said the “produced water release” was detected July 18 on a line that runs between a Husky water-handling facility and a disposal well in a rural area west of Turtleford. The release occurred 500 metres from the Englishman River and the process water entered the river, the incident update said.
Officers observed dead vegetation along a 450-metre path from the point of the water leak to the river, the release said. In 2019, Husky pleaded guilty to provincial and federal charges stemming from that incident; a Lloydminster provincial court judge imposed more than $3.8 million in fines.
