Sources within the Saskatchewan NDP say Whelan's departure came as a surprise.
Leader Carla Beck won the leadership race and has since promised to get into rooms the NDP hasn’t been in for a long time, appearing to take a more centrist approach.
She has visited oil and gas employees in the province’s southeast, a move that has irked some in the party’s environmental wing, but one that signals she’s trying to appeal to a wider base. The person said the NDP, like any political party, has lots of tough conversations behind closed doors, but they must come to a consensus.
Multiple sources said Whelan had done a good job as president and was extremely professional. They were surprised to learn of her departure, with one person calling it “a big loss.”“I think it often goes unsung, just how big a role being the president of a voluntary organization really is,” he said. “Sheila had an incredible amount of energy and commitment and very much contributed to moving a lot of things forward.
