The Santa Cruz City Council swore in Fred Keeley, who will serve as the first directly elected mayor of the city, alongside Councilmember Scott Newsome and re-elected Councilmember Renee Golder.

SANTA CRUZ — Two Santa Cruz City Councilmembers said goodbye as two were sworn in alongside the first directly elected mayor at city hall Tuesday evening.

“There’s been some, honestly, brutal times up on this dais as well,” said Meyers. “This isn’t a service for the faint of heart by any means but that just means that we have a very passionate community, and it’s important to try and serve as many people as you can or at least listen to all the perspectives to the extent that you can.”

Fred Keeley holds a copy of the United States Constitution as he is welcomed to the council dais by member Sandy Brown on Tuesday. Outgoing councilmembers Justin Cummings and Donna Meyers give their parting remarks as the Tuesday evening session of the Santa Cruz City Council gets under way on Tuesday.
