New Cougars teammate J.J. Taylor also commits to Tigers during recruiting visit
San Ysidro High senior Mikey Williams, once the highest rated basketball player from the class of 2023, committed to Memphis in a surprise announcement Saturday night, posting a photo of himself in a Tigers jersey to his 3.7 million Instagram followers.
But most top programs, SDSU included, seem to cool on him over the summer and the fall. He skipped several summer tournaments and transferred back to San Ysidro High after spending two years in North Carolina, and some recruiting services downgraded him. Another issue: Williams signed a contract with Puma, which has no endorsement deals with high-major Division I programs. Memphis will be paid $2.25 million by Nike for the 2022-23 season to be the athletic department’s exclusive sneaker and apparel provider, and it remains unclear whether he will wear Pumas or Nikes there.
