A man was arrested Thursday morning on suspicion of stealing a car with a woman and her one-year-old granddaughter inside the vehicle, San Mateo police said.
SAN MATEO — A man was arrested Thursday morning on suspicion of stealing a car with a woman and her one-year-old granddaughter inside the vehicle, according to authorities.
Police responded at around 10:43 a.m. to the report of a kidnapping in the area of Palm Avenue and 9th Avenue and officers spoke to a woman, who said her car with her family members inside had been stolen after she parked it on the 200 block of 4th Avenue, according to a news release. Officers said the driver parked her car with the keys in the ignition before she and her husband went to a store nearby, while her mother and one-year-old daughter stayed in the car. The driver’s mother then called her shortly after she got into the store that someone stole the vehicle.
The driver ran out of the store after the car and found it on the 800 block of B Street. Both the driver’s mother and daughter were unharmed. The driver identified a man walking away from the scene as the suspect and police got a description, found him nearby and arrested him. He was booked into the San Mateo County Jail for kidnapping, driving and taking a vehicle without consent and kidnapping a child under the age of 14.
