A driver was killed in a solo-vehicle crash Wednesday afternoon at North 11th and Santa Clara streets.

SAN JOSE – A driver was killed in a crash Wednesday evening in San Jose, the latest in a string of roadway deaths that has city leaders calling for vacant police department traffic division positionsThe solo-vehicle crash was reported at 5:13 p.m. at North 11th and Santa Clara streets, according to the San Jose Police Department.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. The Santa Clara County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s Office will release the person’s identity once it has been confirmed and their next of kin is notified. The death marked the city’s 21st traffic fatality of the year. On Wednesday, San Jose leaders said the tide could be turned by filling vacant positions in the traffic division. Just 18 of 30 budgeted positions are filled, according to Chief Anthony Mata.

“The first priority is getting to fill vacancies,” Mayor Sam Liccardo said at a news conference to mark the city’s 20th traffic fatality. “Because vacant positions don’t enforce the law.” San Jose is on track to shatter previous roadway death records. The city saw 60 traffic fatalities in 2021, matching 20-year-plus highs reached in 2015 and 2019. In the previous five years, the city did not typically log 20 or more deaths until May or June.
