The decision drew fire because it separates the Tenderloin from SoMa, a move that critics says reduces the influence of low-income residents in those neighborhoods — a map opponents say is a “a class warfare map.”
Nevertheless, the nine-member appointed panel left the door openfor some minor tweaks next week, despite pressure from the City Attorney’s Office to finish the maps, which were due April 15.
The quick pivot from Townsend had some residents doubting how transparent the task force had been in coordinating the mapping. Cheryl Thornton, an advocate for the Black community who had brought numerous groups into informational meetings at different local libraries across the city, said that she tried to work with Townsend to suggest map lines that would keep together communities of interest.
Some attempted moves, such as moving Chase Center from District 6 into District 10 and reuniting the Tenderloin and SoMa neighborhoods in District 6, failed to garner enough support from the task force. Ultimately, six hours later, the task force voted to accept the map as it was with the Tenderloin in District 5.
Speaking over residents riled up by the appointee’s commentary, Deputy City Attorney Andrew Shen requested that the task force get him the map and its subsequent data as soon as possible so that he and his staff could turn it around for public review.issued a memo to the task force Tuesday
