The order directs police to prioritize fentanyl sales-related crimes and city officials to seek state and federal funding sources for trafficking enforcement, education, and treatment programs.

San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria signed an executive order Tuesday directing staff to prioritize the city’s response to the region’s fentanyl crisis, a drug that claimed more than 800 lives across the county last year.

“The proliferation of fentanyl in our communities — and the accompanying death and destruction it’s causing... demands swift action from all levels of government,“ Gloria said in a statement. In 2017, a Poway man was arrested on suspicion of selling pills laced with the drug to a friend who later overdosed and died. The suspect, Alfred Lemus, pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter and was sentenced in 2018 to 15 years in state prison. He was the first local drug dealer to be charged with murder after an overdose, city officials said.

Stephan said in a Tuesday statement that she supports Gloria’s order, which enhances the focus on increasing prevention and education, while also “pursuing laws that will give law enforcement and prosecutors the tools to investigate and prosecute illegal drug dealers.”
