Several community members called for revisions to the ordinance that will shape the Commission on Police Practices

The San Diego City Council moved forward this week with the framework that will shape the city’s police oversight commission — an ordinance that left out suggestions from some community members who wanted the city to strengthen the commission’s ability to investigate police.for more than a year, with city leaders agreeing to several suggestions from community members along the way.

“This commission is the community’s commission, and the members nominated to the commission should be done by the community,” St. Julian said. Several community members had asked the city not to allow the union to review the ordinance as part of what is known as a meet-and-confer process. City staffers said the city was required under state law to engage in the process to allow the union to evaluate potential impacts to employment conditions.

Following Monday’s vote, Council President Sean Elo-Rivera thanked community members and Councilmember Monica Montgomery Steppe, who also serves as chair of the public safety committee, for working together on an ordinance “which strengthens trust in government and law enforcement.”
