The WorldBeat Cultural Center kicked off its 42nd celebration of the African American holiday

In the center of a Kinara, the seven-branched candleholder used in Kwanzaa celebrations, sits a black candle flanked by three red candles on the left and three green on the right. The middle candle represents Umoja, or unity, and is traditionally lit on the first night of Kwanzaa, as it was Monday at the WorldBeat Cultural Center in Balboa Park.

Founded in 1966 by California State University Long Beach professor Maulana Karenga, Kwanzaa began as an African American cultural celebration. It began Monday and continues through Jan. 1.Each day of Kwanzaa focuses on a specific principle and together they are intended to help people think deeply about their lives, families, communities and struggles for good, according to aKwanzaa is not a religious holiday, but rather a cultural one — not unlike St.

The first day of Kwanzaa celebrates Umoja, or unity. Then comes Kujichagulia, or self-determination; Ujima, or collective work and responsibility; Ujamaa, or cooperative economics; Nia, or purpose; Kuumba, or creativity; and finally Imani, or faith.
