Fines, months of inspections and public shaming on the city website — that’s what could be in store for negligent apartment property owners across the Alamo City.
City code enforcement officers would inspect up to 5 percent of the units at registered apartments monthly. Owners would pay fines to cover the cost of the additional inspections, though Mike Shannon, the city’s director of development services, said the exact fee still needs to be determined. These “bad actor” apartments would be in the program for at least six months, but they can graduate if they fix all the issues and go six months with fewer than three serious citations.
Tenants at Seven Oaks Apartments, renamed Colinas at Medical, for months raised concerns about roaches, rats, major water leaks, broken air conditioning, black mold and more. Shannon said the complex would easily have qualified for the new inspections program.
