Halloween and its traditions of dressing up and trick or treating can be traced back to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain
Samhain came at the end of the harvest time, when fires were lit to ward off evil spirits. Today Halloween celebrations include creating lanterns from pumpkins to do the same. Samhain is an important date in the Pagan calendar marking the feast of the dead and the start of the Celtic New Year.
Although believed to date back thousands of years, the first written descriptions of the festival are found in the 10th century AD and feature in Irish literature, folklore and mythology. Halloween has become associated with dressing up as well, with costumes focussed on the dead and the spirit world, from ghosts and zombies to wizards and witches.
This involved people going from house-to-house in costume or disguise usually reciting verses or songs in exchange for food.In the modern day, Samhain is still observed by neo-pagans and wiccans who perform fire ceremonies and honour their dead.
