A man accused of shooting and killing another man in a downtown Salt Lake parking lot on Sunday has been arrested for investigation of murder.
SALT LAKE CITY — Salt Lake police have arrested a man in connection with a fatal shooting in a downtown parking lot last weekend.
Michael Tifi Trevino, 23, was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail Thursday for investigation of murder and obstruction of justice.in a parking lot between Pierpont Avenue and 300 South. Police say the first arriving officers found a "a large and chaotic scene," with members of the public attempting lifesaving measures on Simanu.
Police say Simanu and Trevino had gotten into a fight. The two men then separated, but a short time later Simanu approached Trevino to continue the fight, witnesses told police. At that point, Trevino pulled out a gun and shot Simanu once in the chest, a police booking affidavit states. Detectives collected surveillance video from the area and said they identified a vehicle that Trevino used to drive away.
About 6:40 p.m. Thursday, members of the Salt Lake City Police Department's Violent Criminal Apprehension Team and SWAT located Trevino at an apartment complex near 500 S. Redwood Road and arrested him.
