Luz Escamilla could become Salt Lake City's first Latina mayor
As a high school graduate, Luz Escamilla moved to Salt Lake City from Mexico seeking the American dream. She wanted to become an entrepreneur, but seeing students of color struggle pushed her to do more.
Now, she's running to become the city's first Latina mayor.Escamilla, 41, has spent the last weeks of her campaign facing her opponent in numerous debates, responding to questions about her faith and knocking on doors in the city's west side -- a traditionally underrepresented area that she calls home."It wasn't planned at all," Escamilla said about her career in politics."I needed to react according to the needs that I was facing in my community.
