Amid a new row over a protest, the Mayor says the London police force is getting better, and tells i about his 10-point plan to make the capital safer for women
, a play about Ruth Snyder, a 1920s New York housewife who murdered her abusive husband. Fittingly, the mayor is here to discuss his plans to combat violence and abuse, too many women have experienced sexual harassment or worse. In a recent three-week period in London, four women were killed by men, something Khan says is “heartbreaking”. On average, in the UK, every three days a woman is killed by her partner or ex-partner.
The events of this weekend show the Met still has a long way to go. Its chief, Sir Mark Rowley, isand the force published, then deleted, a tweet criticised as “victim-blaming”. Khan has summoned Sir Mark to a meeting, and a spokesperson for his office said: “Everybody must feel safe going about in London wherever they please. The way the original incident was dealt with by the Met was concerning and the original response put out by them was insensitive and wrong.
Khan has been in the role for eight years, having been elected in May 2016. Does he feel any of the work he has already done in this area has been successful? For example, the Say Maaate To A Mate campaign, launched in 2023, and aimed at encouraging bystander behaviour. It was pilloried, with feminists saying it was too gentle, while right wingers decried it as woke nannying.
Khan explains that a third of Londoners work between 6pm and 6am, and not all in hospitality, and not all in Zone 1. “I don’t want to be mayor of a city that’s a dormitory city, where basically it’s that you work here and you live there.” He wants people to have fun, too! Though, “a combination of Brexit, the pandemic, the cost of doing business, has made it incredibly hard for hospitality”.
