A San Francisco police mobile command unit parks on Post Street at Union Square earlier this month. After a tough pandemic filled with brazen, well-publicized crimes and many businesses closures, surviving proprietors say a renewed police presence is rebuilding a sense of safety and welcome in the premier shopping district. Robberies and vandalism continued through the end of last year, but now Lejnieks and Roland have taken down their plywood.Union Square Alliance “Every wave of the pandemic was another hard blow to the community … so we were trying to maintain a presence and be that rock ,” she said, recalling the local reaction to George Floyd’s murder and the massive wildfires of summer 2020. “We were there on ground zero, picking up the pieces.”
“This is a breakthrough spring,” she said, noting store expansions and restaurant openings. “There have been challenges, that’s true, but the city is doing a lot to work those out.”
