Ryan Gosling reveals that his leading man potential was questioned by the director of his breakout role, but was also why he landed the job.

Despite being considered one of the biggest stars in the industry, Ryan Gosling reveals The Notebook director Nick Cassavetes doubted his leading man potential. The 2004 romantic drama chronicled the lives of poor lumber mill worker Noah and wealthy heiress Allie as they fall in love one summer but struggle to overcome her parents' reservations in the years that follow.

When exploring his breakout role in The Notebook, the actor recalled that the movie's director, Nick Cassavetes, had a bizarre reason for hiring him, feeling he was not a conventional leading man.

[Director Nick Cassavetes] straight up told me: 'The fact that you have no natural leading man qualities is why I want you to be my leading man.' How The Notebook Proved Gosling Was A Star Prior to starring in the beloved romantic movie, Gosling was still largely known for his time as a Disney child actor with The Mickey Mouse Club, as well as other family-friendly shows Are You Afraid of the Dark?, Goosebumps and Young Hercules.

Cassavetes' initial doubts have been proven wrong in the 20 years since The Notebook hit theaters, with Gosling becoming one of Hollywood's biggest leading men thanks to roles in the likes of Half Nelson, which earned him an Oscar nomination, Crazy, Stupid, Love and Drive, among other things.
