Russian River expected to flood as potent storm slams Bay Area

The Russian River is expected to spill over its banks in Sonoma and Mendocino counties amid a potent atmospheric river.

, officials said Tuesday night. The National Weather Service warned residents of riverside towns such as Guerneville and Hopland to prepare for flooding along roadways and at homes and businesses on Thursday and Friday.

The warning comes in an area of the Golden State that was already drenched in a historic New Year's Eve atmospheric river event. The next storm system is expected to arrive Wednesday morning and dump rain and kick up powerful winds into Thursday morning. Forecasters are referring to the system as aas it's forming rapidly off the coast. They warn that impacts across Northern California will include flooding, power outages, downed trees and potentially even loss of life.

Sonoma County is forecast to get more rain with this storm than it did with the Dec. 31 event, said Sean Miller, a forecaster with the National Weather Service. The Guerneville area is expected to record about 3 inches of rain at lower elevations, 5 to 6 inches in the hills and up to 7 inches in the mountains on Wednesday and Thursday, Miller said.

The Russian River's water level in Guerneville, a riverside town in Sonoma County's famed Wine Country, sat at about 11 feet on Tuesday.
