Russian regional governments have ordered officials to stop taking holidays abroad following complaints that photos of politicians enjoying themselves in exotic destinations were inappropriate during wartime

Oleg Kuvshinnikov, governor of the Vologda region in north-west Russia and member of the ruling United Russia party, issued an instruction to cancel foreign travel plans after a backlash to a local politician’s holiday photos.

“At such a difficult time for the country, spending holidays in luxury resorts and deliberately, publicly posting provocative photos on social networks is unacceptable for either deputies or officials of any level,” said Mr Kuvshinnikov, as reported by Russian media. The demand came after Volgoda assembly member Denis Dolzhenko posted a selfie of himself wearing sunglasses inon Russian social network VK earlier this month. The post drew hundreds of comments, the majority negative.

The governor of Russia's Kursk region – which borders Ukraine – has slammed a local MP who sent holiday greetings to his constituents from a beach in Mexico.
