A Russian government plane has flown to Washington DC to ferry key diplomats back to Moscow amid rising tensions with the West, i can reveal
A former senior US intelligence official said the plane may also be carrying replacement diplomats, including potential intelligence agents, to the US.
The Russian government plane was due to land at Washington Dulles International Airport on Tuesday evening, where US authorities were understood to be monitoring any potential arrivals.The former US intelligence official said the Prigozhin debacle had forced Russia to come to the table and speak with the Western countries over the war in Ukraine.
A serving UK intelligence officer working with the UK government believes it is likely the plane is bringing Russian representatives to the US for diplomatic talks. The official told“We do not want to feed a narrative that all this is a US/Natoinspired plot,” they said. “Clear and, where appropriate, public statements to the contrary reduces the risk.”
