American Katie Uhlaender was once 'cheated' out of a medal by a Russian doping scandal. Years later, she's still calling for much-needed reform.
just as Uhlaender was preparing to race at the Yanqing National Sliding Center on Thursday. When three reporters gave her an overview of the saga, Uhlaender said she assumed the Russian team would be disqualified if Valieva’s positive test were confirmed.
And then she launched into a 360-degree critique of the global anti-doping system. She claimed that testing agencies are "not independent. None of this is independent. It's all run by the IOC." , and presumed them innocent unless proven guilty. "By not banning Russia for four years, there was no need or desire for cultural change by Russian authorities," Rob Koehler, the director general of Global Athlete, told Yahoo Sports. "Clean athletes continue to suffer because of a broken system," he added.
There are, Koehler said, "three organizations to blame for Kamila Valieva's positive test: the World Anti-Doping Agency , the International Olympic Committee and the." Critics have long highlighted conflicts of interest among them — John Coates, for example, is an IOC vice president and the CAS president. This is part of what Uhlaender meant when she said that "none of this is independent." The ITA, she pointed out, is hired by the IOC.
