The head of the U.N. World Food Program has called on world leaders to do more to protect vital seaways into Ukraine to prevent worsening food shortages in the war-torn country and around the world.
“The world leaders are going to have to come together somehow and figure out a way to protect these seaways. The ports have got to be opened up,” David Beasley told “60 Minutes” during an interview in the Black Sea port city of Odessa, a major grain exporter. “Ukraine is the breadbasket of the world. They grow enough food to feed 400 million people. Well, that’s gone.”
The invasion has made it impossible for merchant ships and their crews to sail out of the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov without the risk of being hit. Ports are closed by a Russian blockade that includes floating mines, and access to besieged cities such as Mariupol, Mykolaiv and Kherson has been cut off, Beasley said.
