The Russian defense ministry said it fired an air-launched ballistic missile on Ukraine in what may have been the first use of the system Vladimir Putin announced several years ago in an attention-grabbing speech to Russia’s parliament. Russia on Saturday said it used the weapon to strike a large underground warehouse of missiles and aviation ammunition near Deliatyn in western Ukraine. Russian state media RIA Novosti said it was the first use of the new weapon.it bombs targets across the countryThe so-called Kinzhal ballistic missile Russia said it used in the attack on the facility near Deliatyn is similar to the ground-launched short-range Iskander-M missile it has already employed heavily in Ukraine.
The Kinzhal was successfully tested in July 2018, according to some analysts. It is launched from MiG-31 combat jets and is estimated to have a range of up to 1,200 miles, according to some analysts, though others argued that may be overstated. Russia has said the missile could fly at up to ten times the speed of sound and evade missile defenses.
The missile may also be readied for use from the Su-34 long-range strike fighter, used heavily in Russia’s war on Ukraine, and the Tu-22M3 strategic bomber, according to a Congressional Research Service report.
