According to open source researchers, Russia has lost more than 500 tanks in a little more than a month. This could limit Russia's offensive potential in recent advances.

Russia has lost more than 500 tanks in a little more than a month according to open source researchers Moscow’s forces captured the city of Avdiivka in February to mark their most significant breakthrough in several months and have since claimedthat Ukraine could lose more territory without an increase in western military aid to counter Russia ’s advantage in equipment and manpower, as frontline cities including Chasiv Yar and Kharkiv come under bombardment.

“The advances we are seeing are almost First World War style in terms of how slowly the Russians are advancing and the cost of equipment and manpower,” the analyst said, describing frontal assaults over open fields. “Russia is definitely on the clock with these tactics, because once the stockpile of ex-Soviet equipment is exhausted they will be down to what they can produce and that’s a small fraction of expenditure.

Russia has scaled up military production throughout the war, including tanks, artillery and ammunition. But independent Russian media reported last summer that itsKonrad Muzyka, a defence analyst with consultancy Rochan and regular visitor to the front, said Russian losses are “not sustainable over the next few months” and commanders have failed to make effective use of their armour advantage.

Russia’s armour advantage has been largely neutralised by Ukrainian drones, the analyst said, which have effectively prevented surprise attacks and rendered advancing vehicles sitting ducks. Drones have also impacted Russian reconnaissance capabilities, so that “even if you get past drones and artillery, the chances are you will get immobilised by mines”.
