Rudi Valentino, a male orangutan and one of the Houston Zoo's longtime residents, has died at the age of 45. Rudi first arrived at the zoo in 1978 at 2 months old.
Rudi Valentino, a male orangutan and one of the Houston Zoo's longtime residents, has died at the age of 45.
"Rudi is one of those animals you don't ever forget," said Judith McAuliffe, curator of primates for Houston Zoo."He makes a big impression, for one thing. And he was very opinionated about who he liked and who he didn't like. You always knew where you stood with him."For humans who passed Rudi's test, he would make silly faces and look them straight in the eye."But if he really liked you he'd give you a side glance," McAuliffe said.
Killam worked with Rudi for nearly 30 years, until her retirement from the zoo in 2016. From then on she visited him once or twice each year, always eventful reunions."He would do a huge display, with a big long call — these big inhalations and exhalations of air, like a roar. And, we'd talk," Killam said."Meaning I would talk, but it would feel like I was having a conversation with him.
Rudi weighed roughly 275 pounds. Sitting in a window on a raised ledge put him face-to-face with 3- and 4-year old children who came to see him. He often stared back.
