Being bilingual allows coach to convey details without need for interpretation, and there are plenty of details for pitchers to know in today's game

On occasion, an umpire would walk toward the mound last season with the intention of coercing Padres pitching coach Ruben Niebla to wrap up a visit with a pitcher.

“For the guys that don’t,” Garcia said of pitchers whose English is less advanced, “it’s really big.” Niebla was hired before last season because he speaks another language and can effectively communicate that third language to those who need to hear it as well. The two men who preceded Niebla — the only two pitching coaches the Padres had over nearly two decades before Niebla essentially came home to work for the team nearest his El Centro home — were highly respected and longtime practitioners of teaching by what they saw.

Watch Niebla work with a pitcher, as he did alone with Yu Darvish for several minutes Friday, and it is clear he is melding every aspect of training — going over body alignment, follow-through, arm motion and explaining how Darvish could work on these things in the weight room. Somewhat counter to the new way of thinking, with its religious adherence to what the numbers say, Niebla reaches back to a way of thinking and coaching that extends over two decades and adapts his teaching to his pupil.

Padres Tab Snell as Opening Day StarterPadres Tab Snell as Opening Day StarterBlake Snell is one of the most talented pitchers in baseball. He’s also one of the most confounding. Take the 2022 season, for example. In the first half Snell made 11 starts and pitched to a 5.22 ERA, issuing 31 walks in 50.0 innings. That’s not great. That’s not even good, and definitely not what anyone would expect from a…
