Royse City High School was locked down over TikTok challenge with airsoft guns
Revised at 1:55 p.m. to reflect that the students will not face charges.
The Royse City Police Department said it received a call about 8:15 a.m. that someone was pointing a gun at another person in the parking lot, and then several people were seen running from that area into the Rockwall County school. Authorities and Royse City ISD administrators quickly identified five students involved, according to police. The students were taken into custody without incident and the lockdown was lifted by 11 a.m.
Officers recovered three airsoft rifles, one airsoft pistol and a BB gun from the students, and later learned they were participating in a trend on TikTok called the “Orbeez Challenge,” in which students shoot pellets at others.The police department called the challenge a “senseless and dangerous trend that is disrupting school environments across the country,” adding that it strains law enforcement resources because officers must respond to each incident as if it is an active-shooter call.
