The change could make Christmas post more expensive
Royal Mail has made a major change to its fees which could impact postage costs for customers this Christmas.The fee is designed to help fund Royal Mail’s decarbonisation measures and while it won’t be charged directly to consumers, there are concerns that businesses will hike their prices to cover the extra costs. This in turn could mean the costs will be passed onto customers who may end up paying more, The Sun reports.
In addition, business account customers will also have to pay a peak surcharge of 5p for letters and 10p for parcels. The 5p peak surcharge will apply to Royal Mail 24 and Royal Mail 48 large letters, Royal Mail Tracked 24 and Royal Mail Tracked 48 letterboxable products sent by business account holders.These charges are due to take effect on November 20 and end on January 7, 2024, meaning the fees will be in place during the busy Christmas period.
It comes just a month after Royal Mail announced a price hike to its first class stamps, which have gone up from £1.10 to £1.25. A Royal Mail spokesperson said: "Christmas is our busiest time of year and we invest in thousands of additional staff, more vehicles and additional parcel sorting sites to manage around double the normal volumes of parcels. Other parcel carriers already apply a similar surcharge during the Christmas period."
