Long live the REX: Rotary-powered plug-in hybrid Mazda MX-30 R-EV on sale this spring
, which used a 647cc two-cylinder petrol engine to act as a mobile generator and extend that car’s range by around 100 miles.
It’s suggested the engine will be mounted horizontally underneath the rear floor panel, taking advantage of the rotary’s low, flat profile. It will kill two birds with one stone for Mazda. First, giving it an electrified vehicle with a competitive range – the current MX-30 EV has many positives, but its 100-odd mile range on a full charge is not one of them.
It also allows the company to bring back the Wankel rotary engine, a powertrain that’s deeply ingrained in Mazda’s history but which has struggled to find an application in the modern age where fuel efficiency and longevity are so important.
