Ronald McDonald House of Charities of Chicagoland and Northwest Indiana area has broken its donation record thanks to money given by a Naperville customer that put them over $1 million for 2023.
A thank you celebration will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Thursday at the 3232 S. Route 59 store, where the milestone was achieved and customers and crew members will be recognized.Holly Buckendahl, CEO of the Ronald McDonald House Charities, said they raised a total of $800,000 last year so to hit the million-dollar mark in September was a thrilling accomplishment.
“It was amazing to really reach that goal to support families who are receiving services across our continuum of care at Ronald McDonald houses,” Buckendahl said.Part of the increase was the result of National Nonprofit Day on Aug. 17, when McDonald’s held its first “Round-Up for RMHC Rally” and encouraged customers to round up their bill’s total, with the difference being given to the Ronald McDonald House campaign, she said.
“It’s doesn’t have to be just a moment in time,” Buckendahl said. “When you are a regular customer who goes to McDonald’s a couple of times a week, each time you have the availability to round up to the nearest dollar.” Money raised supports free, convenient housing for families of children in hospitals, who can stay at Ronald McDonald houses and use Ronald McDonald family rooms, which are inside of hospitals. With a $12.6 million budget, 177 families with seriously ill children can be housed nightly.
“For us, that’s thousands of children and parents each year that didn’t expect to have a seriously ill child who are trying to navigate and need to stay close to where the treatment is happening,” Buckendahl said.at Park Ridge’s Advocate Children’s Hospital will be opened, she said. It’s a short distance from the hospital’s neonatal intensive care unit and the hematology oncology infusion center, Buckendahl said.“We need to continue the momentum,” Buckendahl said. “It all adds up.
