Elehuris Montero arrived at spring training with a lot to prove. The Rockies’ rookie has done that — and then some.

Montero, 24, not only won the starting third-base job, but he also showed that he might be primed to be a high-impact player.

“The more he works, the better his footwork is getting,” new infield coach Warren Schaeffer said. “For me, it’s just a matter of him defending at the next level, because I saw him play third at Triple-A and he got it done there. He’s a big man and he has to be in the right spot because his range is not going to be incredible. But he can make the plays there.”

“That’s the thing that he has to focus on, like a lot of players,” Black told reporters in Scottsdale, Ariz., on Sunday. “With time, he’ll get better and better. He’s not a finished product, he’s just 24 years old. There are still some things he’s going to continue to grow from in the big leagues.”With left-hander Ty Blach cemented in the bullpen because of an excellent spring, it appears that one of the final spots will go to either Connor Seabold or Gavin Hollowell.
