The Rockets received permission to interview Golden State Warriors assistant Kenny Atkinson and Toronto Raptors assistant Adrian Griffin, a person with knowledge of the process said on Tuesday. Both have previous ties with the Rockets, Atkinson as a player development assistant for four years under Jeff Van Gundy and Griffin as a player in 2003-04, Van Gundy’s and Atkinson’s first year with the team.
Griffin, the father of Atlanta Hawks rookie A.J. Griffin, played nine NBA seasons and has been an assistant for 15 seasons with the Bucks, Bulls, Magic Thunder and since the 2018-19 season, with the Raptors under Nick Nurse, including the Raptors championship season. Griffin, 48, has been a frequent candidate for head coaching positions, most recently with the Lakers.
