Rockets' trade-deadline deals end one era, with an eye toward offseason retooling
The Rockets traded away Eric Gordon, the last piece from their years as NBA title contenders, and made moves at the trade deadline to offer greater flexibility for offseason retooling.An era that was over several seasons and many, many losses ago has its official time of death. The Rockets’ last tie to their most recent seasons as a championship contender has moved on.
The Rockets will bring back John Wall from the Clippers, though he is expected to receive another buyout. Wall was with Houston for two seasons, sitting out all of last season inbefore the Rockets bought out his contract, paying him $40 million this season. To make room on the roster to complete the trade, the Rockets will waive center Boban Marjanovic, a person with knowledge of the plan said, with the intention of re-signing him after he clears waivers. Marjanovic would net an extra $1 million in salary while the Rockets retain his full Bird rights and reduce his cap hold to a league minimum.
The Rockets agreed Thursday to deal Fernando along with Garrison Mathews for guard Justin Holiday and center Frank Kaminsky, a person with knowledge of the deal said. Fernando, who had a career high 10 rebounds Wednesday, has averaged 4.1 points and 3.9 rebounds in 11.7 minutes per game. He was hurt in the second game of the season and missed 15 games. He has been in and out of the rotation since he returned but has played regularly in recent weeks.
