Lucas has opted to join the front office, working as an assistant to general manager Rafael Stone, a person with knowledge of his plans said.
Lucas, a former Cavaliers, Spurs and 76ers head coach, joined Mike D’Antoni’s staff with the Rockets in 2016-17 running the team’s player development program. A candidate to succeed D’Antoni as head coach, he remained with the team and was Stephen Silas’ lead assistant the past three seasons. Lucas, 69, was the first pick of the 1976 draft out of Maryland, where he was an All-American in basketball and tennis, and played his first two seasons with the Rockets, one of three stints with the team. He went to the Golden State Warriors as compensation after the Rockets signed Rick Barry as a free agent. He returned to the Rockets in 1984 but was suspended in 1986, one of multiple league and team suspensions from 1982 to 1986.
In 1990, he founded John Lucas Enterprises, a wellness and aftercare program geared toward athletes, though it has grown to helping athletes and others deal with a variety of personal issues.
