'Robot pants' from a Houston Methodist study are the latest adventure for a Texas mom and daughter
he high-tech exoskeleton that Kirsten Segraves calls her “robot pants” is critical to a spinal cord stimulation pilot study she’s part of at Houston Methodist.Segraves, who turns 30 this month, always insisted that she was taller. The claim was difficult to prove, though, because she’s been using a wheelchair since she suffered a spinal cord injury in a car accident when she was 16 years old.
“It tugged at my heartstrings. We never want to see our kids struggle,” she said. “To be able to see her stand and take steps — it was beautiful.” Segraves was born in Arkansas, and she was staying there with her grandparents when she suffered a spinal compression fracture, a broken shoulder and broken ribs in the accident. She spent three months in a hospital as she recovered and underwent therapy.
“I've got videos of her doing all kinds of stuff,” Lyle said. “It’s very fulfilling to me to see her get that independence back and be just phenomenal.” They’re heading to California this month to celebrate Segraves' birthday. They’ll see the Redwood National and State Parks before heading to Temecula, where they’ll ride in a hot air balloon.
