Texas Southern quarterback Andrew Body is sacked by UTSA linebacker Trey Moore during the third quarter of Saturday’s game at the Alamodome. As UTSA’s offense lined up against Texas Southern on Saturday, coach Jeff Traylor was surprised to see the Roadrunners’ receivers facing one-on-one matchups on the outside.
The connection proved to be record-setting on Saturday, as Harris set a program single-game mark with 392 yards through the air and Clark notched the receiving record with 219 yards as UTSA beat Texas Southern 52-24 in the Alamodome. Instead, the ground game “took a step back” on Saturday, as UTSA finished with 112 rushing yards at an average of 4.1 yards per carry. Traylor said Texas Southern emphasized taking away the run, at the expense of allowing a record-setting passing output.
The play was Carpenter’s first touch since transferring to UTSA from Colorado this offseason, as usual kick returner Dadrian Taylor sat out Saturday due to injury. Running back LaDarius Owens broke loose for a 39-yard gain on the Tigers’ first play from scrimmage, setting the tone for a group that racked up 235 yards on the ground. Quarterback Andrew Body ran for two scores and also threw for a touchdown, connecting on 17 of 32 attempts for 229 yards with two interceptions — to UTSA’s Dywan Griffin and Avery Morris.
Gavin Sharp — “as fundamentally sound as any kid I’ve got right now,” Traylor said — was flagged for holding. Nick Booker-Brown was penalized for a late hit personal foul on a play in which the whistle never blew, Traylor said, and he earned an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty for what Traylor deemed retaliation.
