The Riverside County deputy who was killed in Lake Elsinore has been identified as Deputy Darnell Calhoun. The sheriff is expected to provide further details at a press conference this evening
"We are devastated to announce the passing of Deputy Darnell Calhoun who was killed in the line of duty this afternoon," the department announced on Twitter.
Riverside County Sheriff's Deputy Darnell Calhoun was fatally shot Friday afternoon in the city of Lake Elsinore, authorities said. The deputy was shot and rushed to Inland Valley Medical Center in Wildomar for surgery, initially listed in "serious condition." Just before 8 p.m., officials confirmed that the deputy had died.The incident was reported Friday afternoon in the 18500 block of Hilldale Lane.Dozens of law enforcement vehicles were showing up outside the hospital.
There was also a large law enforcement presence at the home in the Lakeland Village neighborhood where the incident occurred.The incident happened just over two weeks after another Riverside County deputy, Isaiah Cordero, was shot and killed in a violent encounter with a felon who had a long record. The gunman in that incident was shot and killed by deputies after a chase.
